Mabel batted her eyes at the young policeman.

“Ma’am, we’ve looked everywhere. There’s no suspicious dog. Have a nice night, and be sure to lock your doors.”

“Officer, won’t you have some tea? I have some lovely cookies…” She tilted her head coquettishly.

“No, ma’am. And Mrs. Brown, please stop calling us unless there’s a real emergency.” He touched his cap. “You sleep tight, now.”

Mabel turned away with a pout. There had to be something…she found the tin of mouse poison in her pantry and wondered what just a grain or two would taste like in her morning tea.

The Lord God has told us what is right and what he demands: "See that justice is done, let mercy be your first concern, and humbly obey your God." (Micah 6:8)
